Privacy Policy
Pickable is made by 10ten Studio Inc. ("we"). This policy explains what the Pickable app for Android and iPhone does with information on your phone, and the few things that leave it.
Summary
- Your location, trips, finds, photos, notes and check-in contact stay on your phone. We never receive them. If you turn on Help make the calls better, only the result of each trip you log (the mapped area, date, call and what you found) is sent, with nothing that identifies you.
- If you allow it, the app sends anonymous usage events and crash reports so we can fix bugs. They never include your location, spots, notes or contacts, and you can turn them off in Settings.
- If you subscribe to Pro and server alerts are on, the coordinates of the spots you watch and a push-notification token are stored on our alert server so it can send you flush alerts.
- On our website, Google Analytics runs only if you allow it. The app doesn't use it.
- We don't sell or share personal information, and there are no ads.
Location
If you tap Use my location, Pickable asks your phone for your approximate location. The app uses it only on your phone to show how far away each area is. It's rounded to about 1 km and stored on your phone. It is never sent to us or anyone else. You can clear it in the app (location button → Don’t sort by distance) or turn off location permission for Pickable in Android Settings at any time.
Field mode and trip tracking
When you start a trip, Pickable asks for precise location and records your track, the spot you mark as your car and any finds you mark. It keeps recording while the screen is off or you switch apps, so the way back to your car still works. While it does, Android shows a "Pickable trip running" notification and iPhone shows the location indicator. Tracking stops when you end the trip. The track, car spot and finds are saved with the trip on your phone and are never uploaded.
Photos of finds
If you add a photo to a find, a smaller copy is stored in the app's own storage on your phone. Photos are never uploaded.
Backups and exports
Export GPX and Back up everything create files on your phone and open your phone's share sheet. The file goes only where you send it (for example Google Drive, iCloud Drive or email). A backup can be locked with a passphrase you choose; we never see it and can't recover it. If device backup is on, your phone also backs up Pickable's saved data (trips, finds and saved spots, not photos or maps): to your Google account under Google's terms on Android, or to iCloud under Apple's terms on iPhone.
Map tiles
To show the topo map, the app downloads map and terrain tiles from OpenFreeMap and Amazon Web Services (AWS Terrain Tiles). Those servers see which map area is requested and your IP address, as with any online map. No account or identifier is sent.
Region data
Region packs are downloaded from the Pickable website when you choose a region, and the app checks a small index file about once a day for updates. The requests include only the file name and your IP address.
Weather and wildfire information
The app asks Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) for rain and temperatures at the foraging areas’ own coordinates, not yours. For spots watched with Pro, it also asks Environment and Climate Change Canada (api.weather.gc.ca) for measured rain over a box around those spots. When you open an area or plan a trip, it asks the BC Government's open data service (openmaps.gov.bc.ca) for BC Wildfire Service restrictions and fire status around that area. These services see the area requested and your IP address, as with any website. No identifier is sent.
Usage analytics and crash reports
If analytics are on, the app sends anonymous events to PostHog (EU servers, posthog.com), which processes them for us. Events describe what happened in the app, for example "opened an area page (chanterelles, Go)", "started a trip", "viewed the paywall" or "the app hit an error on this screen", along with the app version, the device platform and a random ID created on install. They never include your location or any coordinates, area names, notes, photos or contacts. We use them only to improve Pickable. You can turn them off any time in Saved → Settings → Share anonymous usage and crash reports. Doing so stops sending and deletes any events waiting on your phone.
Check-in contact and check-in texts
If you add a check-in contact, their name and number are stored only on your phone. Text my plan and Send a check-in text open your own messages app with the text filled in; nothing is sent unless you press send there. If you planned a return time, the app schedules a reminder on your phone for 30 minutes after it.
Pickable Pro and purchases
Subscriptions are sold through Google Play on Android and the App Store on iPhone. Purchases are verified by RevenueCat, our subscription service. It receives an anonymous app user ID, your purchase receipt and your subscription status from Google Play or the App Store. It does not receive your location, trips or finds. See revenuecat.com/privacy.
Flush alerts
Pro checks the weather for the spots you watch and alerts you when they're likely fruiting.
- Checked on the phone (the default): the list of watched spots and your alert history stay on your phone.
- Server alerts (when enabled in the app): your phone sends our alert server (hosted on Cloudflare) the watched spots (name, species, coordinates and elevation), the timing learned from your finds, a push token from Firebase Cloud Messaging and your anonymous RevenueCat ID. The server uses them only to check your Pro status and send flush alerts through Firebase. Your account isn't linked to your name or email. Registrations are deleted when Pro ends, when you turn alerts off, or after 60 days without the app checking in.
Trip results (only if you turn it on)
If you turn on Help make the calls better (it's off unless you choose it), each trip you log afterwards sends one record to our server: the mapped Pickable area you logged it for (a public area of about 10 km or a named burn, not your spot within it), its region, the species, the date, what the app called (for example Go) and what you found (found, none, or wrong timing, and roughly how many). It never includes your location, track, car spot, the GPS of your finds, notes, photos, drive time or check-in contact. Records carry no account, device ID or push token, and our server doesn't keep your IP address with them, so we can't tell who sent a record or link two records together. We use them only to test and improve the calls and forecasts, and we keep them for up to 3 years. Our server is hosted on Cloudflare. Turn it off any time in Settings → Help make the calls better; records not yet sent are deleted from your phone. Because records aren't linked to you, we can't find and delete records already sent.
Trip log
Trips you log (area, date, outcome, optional notes, and for trips ended in field mode the marked finds, car spot and track) are stored only on your phone. Uninstalling the app or clearing its storage deletes them, unless you made a backup.
Your choices and deleting data
- Everything on your phone: clear Pickable's storage in Android Settings, or delete the app (both phones).
- Analytics: switch off in Settings. To delete events already sent, email us your analytics ID (shown in Settings under the switch).
- Website analytics: choose Analytics settings at the bottom of any page on the website, or clear the site's cookies.
- Trip results: switch off Help make the calls better in Settings.
- Server alerts: they're removed when Pro ends or alerts are off for all spots. You can also email us to delete them.
Website: analytics and the early-access list
Analytics. Our website (getpickable.app) can use Google Analytics, a service run by Google, to show us how visitors use it: which pages and sections they view, which buttons they tap, whether they open and finish the sign-up form, and which town or species they pick on the page. Google Analytics loads only if you choose Allow when the website asks. If you choose No thanks, or don't choose, nothing is sent to Google. Your choice is remembered in your browser's local storage. If you allow it, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) holding a random ID, and Google receives your browser and device type, screen size, language, the page that linked you here, and your approximate area (city level), which Google works out from your IP address. Google Analytics doesn't store IP addresses. We've turned off Google signals and advertising features, so we don't use this data for ads or link it to a Google account. We keep it for 14 months. Google processes it for us as a service provider and may store it outside Canada; see policies.google.com/privacy. You can change your choice at any time with Analytics settings at the bottom of any page, or by clearing this site's cookies and storage. The Pickable app doesn't use Google Analytics.
Early-access list. If you join the early-access list, we keep your email address and the phone type you chose (Android or iPhone). If you joined from Get told when they turn Go, we also keep the town and species you were looking at, so the launch email can start with spots near you. This is stored in Netlify, which hosts the website, and may be stored outside Canada. We use it only to email you about Pickable's launch and to invite you to test it, and we never share or sell it. Every email has a way to unsubscribe, or email us and we'll delete it.
Links to other services
When you tap Open in Google Maps, Driving directions or a BC Wildfire Service link, that service opens and its own privacy policy applies.
Children
Pickable is not directed at children under 13.
